I think the fall of '71 has the most "mind-altering" shows of the year, aside from all the new songs.

This show has a rare first-set Dark Star, but the real treat is the Not Fade Away, with the China Cat jam they did frequently that fall; also, the end instrumental of Goin' Down the Road was extended much longer in '71 than in later years.

By the way, CPW, if you're looking at the "birth of the Deadhead scene" I think it's earlier than '71....have you heard the 3-21-70 Port Chester shows? The audience is absolutely rabid.
